Brownfield Development – Asbestos Remediation of a Former Hospital Site

Southern Testing were appointed to undertake a Phase 1 Desk Study and Phase II Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Ground Investigation to support the developers planning application.

The initial site walk over survey identified the presence of asbestos containing materials (ACM’s) within a maze of underground ducts, some of which were intact and others partially collapsed. Made ground soils on the site also contained loose asbestos cement and insulation materials.

Following detailed investigation, we proposed a remediation strategy based on a two phase approach. A specialist Remediation Contractor was appointed and Southern Testing provided a watching brief during the remediation and undertook all verification works to obtain regulatory signoff and allow safe development of the site.
