Waste Classification

Waste Types

Waste generated as part of a development may include; general construction waste (bricks, plastic, plasterboard, pipe, wood paper etc..) excess soil from excavations, or contaminated soils.

Waste is now classified into three main types:·

    • Inert·
    • Non Hazardous
    • Hazardous
Waste Producers Responsibilities

There are specific requirements, which relate to each waste type. However, in general, as waste producers, Developers hold responsibilities under the various governing regulations, the key elements of which are:

Suitable landfills should be identified as early as possible for those soils, which are known to be requiring disposal. This will be particularly pertinent where WAC tests are required, as they typically take 3-4 weeks to complete.

Site Waste Management Plans

New regulations introduced in April 2008 require a site waste management plan (SWMP) for all new construction projects worth more than £300,000. A SWMP is a live document and it must be updated through the course of the project (at least every three months as the project progresses) and be kept for at least two years after completion. Its aim is to reduce wastes, and increase reuse/recycling.

The level of detail required in a SWMP depends on the estimated build cost but may include:·

    • Types of waste removed from the site.
    • Identity of the person who removed the waste and their waste carrier registration number.
    • A description of the waste.
    • Site that the waste was taken to.
    • Environmental permit or exemption held by the site where the material is taken.

Southern Testing are experienced in the classification and management of waste and are able to provide Waste Classification Reporting to all clients.
