Earthworks

Slope Stability Investigation, Analysis and Remedial Design

The cause of slopes failure is either natural for example high rainfall, coastal erosion, flooding, or more commonly by poorly designed engineering works, for example road cuttings in slopes which have pre-existing slip surfaces, surcharging a slope, changing the groundwater regime, removing tree cover. Southern Testing has a wealth of experience investigating slopes which have both naturally failed, and where a risk of slope failure has been recognised on engineering works.

Our engineering and technical team has experience in:

  • Designing the Investigation
  • Undertaking the Fieldwork
  • Restricted Access Rigs
  • Installation of Instrumentation
  • Long and Short Term Monitoring
  • Laboratory analysis
  • Geomorphological and Hazard Mapping
  • Slope Analyses
  • Advising & Designing Slope Remedial Schemes
  • Soil Stabilisation
  • Overseeing the Installation of the Chosen Design

Our projects range in scale between small private plots, to large housing developments and civil engineering projects.

Earthworks

Southern Testing's expertise in earthworks includes determination of soil compaction parameters, specification of fill materials, optimisation of design, monitoring, quality control and performance, design of cut and fill slopes and analysis of settlement characteristics.

A critical factor in earthworks is the costs and benefits in minimising the import and export of bulk materials from site. By combining our wide range of experience, with our knowledge of the latest investigation and construction techniques, we are able to provide innovative and cost effective, solutions in the following areas:

  • Reinforced Soil Slopes
  • Soil Nails
  • Lightweight Fills
  • Retaining Walls
  • Crib walls
  • Gabbion Walls
  • Drainage
  • Temporary Support
  • Surcharge Design
  • Vibro Methods
  • Dynamic Compaction
