Rubber Works, Woking, Surrey
Background
This 2.9Ha site was occupied by a factory producing rubberised fabric and sheeting, The factory was in operation for nearly 40 years and a wide range of processes had been present at different times. The site was to be redeveloped for housing with private gardens.
Investigation
A desk study and site walkover identified a number of key potential source areas for contamination, including underground storage tank farms and plant handling solvents and oils, workshop areas, a wash-down bay and interceptors. Groundwater monitoring identified near saturation toluene contamination in the shallow fluvial aquifer beneath the site, along with trichloroethene contamination in an underlying Tertiary sand aquifer.
In-situ treatment of groundwater
A programme of in-situ treatment of the groundwater by chemical oxidation using Fenton's Reagent and Permanganate was agreed with the Environment Agency and successfully implemented prior to the demolition of the factory. Groundwater monitoring continued through the re-development phase without disrupting site works.
Remediation Validation
Southern Testing were on site throughout the demolition and site clearance phase, during which time shallow soils remediation was carried out. The site remediation and validation was carried out with full regulatory approval.
