Case Studies

Builders Yard, Brasted, Kent

Introduction

Site comprised a former builders yard with classic car workshop. There were a number of above ground fuel tanks and a paint/chemical store associated with the builders yard.

The site is underlain by alluvium to the north and terrace gravels to the south over the Folkestone formation. The Folkestone formation is a minor aquifer and the site is located within a Zone III (Total Catchment) Source Protection Zone. A groundwater abstraction for public water supply is located within 500m of the site.

Site Investigation

The site investigation highlighted two hydrocarbon hotspots on the site, recording TPH levels up to 16,000mg/kg. The elevated TPH was mostly encountered in the top 0.5-1.5m. The made ground encountered across the site was moderately contaminated with lead, zinc and benzo(a)pyrene.

Remediation Design and Validation

The method statement proposed the removal of the hydrocarbon hotspots, the made ground was also to be reduced to 600mm below formation level.

The hydrocarbon contaminated soils were taken to a soil treatment facility in Colnbrook, near Heathrow. A total of 41 loads, totalling 760 tonnes were removed as part of the remediation exercise.

Validation visits were carried out during the remediation and construction phases.
