New Glass House at RHS Wisley

Background
The site comprised an open grassed field located on the western extremes of the gardens at RHS Wisley. It was proposed to develop the site with two large linked glasshouse structures and an ornamental lake.
Site Investigation
Southern Testing carried out a detailed site investigation.
Geological records indicate the site to be underlain by Kempton Park Gravel over Bagshot beds. Within the area of the proposed glasshouses, the upper approximate 1.5m soils were variable and comprise sands and gravels that varied between a loose to dense state while impersistent clays generally had a soft consistency and were highly compressible. The underlying sands and gravels were generally in a medium dense to dense state.
In addition a high groundwater table was measured between 0.5 and 1.0m bgl.
Recommendations
Noting the poor soil and groundwater conditions and following detailed discussions with the Engineer, Client and Ground Treatment Specialist, a foundation solution was proposed that included raising levels with sand / gravel materials to form a suitable working platform and ground treatment using vibro-stone columns to support loaded pad foundations.
